The Story

A Short List, By the Creek

Some bars print a drink menu the size of a phone book and call it range. We are not doing that. Shem Creek is a working creek — shrimp boats still tie up among the docks the way they have since the trawlers showed up in the 1930s — and the drink that fits a place like this is a cold one you can hold while the tide moves. So the list stays short on purpose: a few drafts, some wine, a few cocktails. That is the whole idea.

What’s behind the bar

Pour Local, Pour Cold

Charleston turned out to be a real beer-and-spirits town, and the law caught up to it — the 2007 “Pop the Cap” change lifted the cap that kept the good stuff out, and full pints followed in 2013. We get to lean on that. Mount Pleasant alone has a cluster of breweries up near Long Point Road, and South Carolina makes its own sweet-tea vodka. None of it is on the creek — but all of it is close. The bar reads the room: something frozen when it is hot, something citrusy, something plain on the rocks.
