Twice a year, somebody from a shop like ours flies down to Orlando and spends three days walking a convention floor the size of a small town. It’s called Surf Expo, and it is not a festival or a sale — it’s a trade show, buyers and brands, closed to the public. This is the unglamorous part nobody puts on a postcard: the place where the goods on our shelves get chosen, one booth at a time.

The Hunt for Good Goods

Surf Expo has been running since 1976, which makes it the largest and longest-running show of its kind in the world — in 2026 it turns fifty. The floor is exactly the mix a coastal shop stocks: surf and swim, beachwear and footwear, resort and boutique apparel, and the gift, decor, and souvenir corner where the small good stuff lives. A buyer’s job there is simple to say and hard to do — walk the booths, meet the people who actually make the things, and bring back whatever you think your customers will love. That’s the whole trick to a shelf worth browsing. Somebody went and found it on purpose.

What we’re after

Sourced, Not Stumbled Into

A show like Surf Expo is a wholesale marketplace, not a checkout line. Buyers travel in, meet the brands, and write orders for the season ahead — the industry calls it sourcing, which is a tidy word for a lot of walking and a lot of saying maybe. It’s a relationship business: the people who buy for thousands of storefronts come back to the same makers year after year because the goods held up and the customers came back for them. That’s the bar we’re shopping to — the stuff we’d be glad to hand a neighbor.
